How many sessions will you need?

Therapy is a uniquely personal journey and is different for everyone. Some people prefer to end therapy once they begin to feel at peace with a particular area of their life, while others choose to continue their own self-exploration. What can take time is becoming comfortable with really opening up and being honest with yourself and with your therapist. Then it's really up to you.

Six Session Model

In a six session model, session 1 is typically for assessment and goal setting; sessions 3 and 4 are for development of insights and strategies; and sessions 5 and 6 are for practice and ending the therapy. Short-term therapy can be very effective for working on a specific issue, a top-up to help during a particularly difficult time or to troubleshoot issues that may have arisen at the completion of longer term therapy.

Sixteen Session Model

16 sessions

A sixteen session model is effective for working with problems that are more complex, or where multiple issues are being explored. Clients who have worked with this model have frequently reported no further problems around the issues worked on a year after the therapy finishes.
